Zines & Bookbinding: Works with Paper
1) The Security Zines Series
These zines called Security Zines are part of an ongoing series of one-of-a-kind handmade publications. The zines explore topics of safety, visibility, information access, language, and speculative worlds. Although sometimes, they simply turn out to be a thing of beauty.
Each zine includes unique and original touches including collages, drawings, and watercolors.
2) Bookbinding
Bookbinding is an intrinsic part of graphic design for book designers, an ingredient that furthers meaning and enhances design objects. I am a self-taught bookbinder continually exploring experimental and unusual methods.
Notebooks are made using (mostly) upcycled paper; covers are chicken feed bags. Bound by hand.
Notebooks’ inside pages use (mostly) upcycled and vintage papers gathered at second-hand stores, estate sales, and as a hand-me-downs
An experimental bookbinding exercise. Each signature is 12-pages and bound with elastic string wrapped around the cover. The number of elastic strings indicates the number of signatures and additional signatures can be added as the book grows.
Made of a single 11” x 17” sheet of paper and folded in quarters, this simple “binding” technique is a great beginner’s introduction to the magic of making books. This pamphlet was made for a bookbinding workshop at Ukiah High School
